Cervical Cancer - Human papillomavirus Vaccines

Ease your mind with vaccinationsBoth the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and the American College Health Association have recommended HPV vaccination.

In your late teens or 20's? Have a young daughter? Protect yourself with Pap Smears and HPV Vaccination available at the Manchester Clinic

Having regular Pap tests is one of the best ways to help protect against cervical cancer in the future. A Pap test, also known as a Pap smear, is part of the gynaecological exam and helps detect abnormal cells in the lining of the cervix before they have a chance to become precancers or cervical cancer. A Pap test can't diagnose HPV. But it can look for abnormal cells (that are caused by HPV) in the lining of the cervix before the cells become precancers or cancer.

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, a woman's first Pap test should be 3 years after becoming sexually active or at age 21—whichever comes first. After that, a Pap test should be part of a yearly gynaecological exam.

For girls who are not old enough for a Pap test, regular wellness visits are a good way to start lifelong, healthy habits.

HPV test

A test now exists that allows us to see if a woman is at High or Low risk for HPV. This is a recommended test.

Vaccinations helps guard against diseases caused by HPV

We provide a cervical cancer vaccine that helps protect against 4 types of human papillomavirus (HPV): 2 types that cause 70% of cervical cancer cases, and 2 more types that cause 90% of genital warts cases.

Who should get vaccinated ?

HPV Vaccinations are for girls and young women ages 9 and up. Vaccination is recommended for girls as young as 9 because it works when given before there is any contact with HPV Types 6, 11, 16, and 18.

If you're already sexually active, you may still benefit from vaccination. That's because even if you have been exposed to HPV, it's unlikely that you have been exposed to all the types of the virus covered by this cervical cancer vaccine. That means a vaccine could still help guard you against HPV types you haven't been exposed to.
