This is a very well known condition.
Basically there are 2 main types – type 1 childhood diabetes due to lack of insulin from the pancreas which we all need to utilize sugar. Without it the sugar remains in the blood and is passed out in the urine with lots of water with the initial symptoms of polyurea (lots of urine), polydipsia (lots of drinking) and weight loss. There is a genetic predisposition and environmental triggering factors and antibodies are formed against the child’s insulin producing cells.
Type 2 is the adult type often associated with obesity. Initially the patient has enough insulin but there is resistance to its action.
With childhood diabetes insulin injections are needed. With adults treatment may be diet alone or diet and oral drugs. They too sometimes need insulin injections.
The treatment of diabetes in children is what has been called the boring trial of “diet, exercise, and insulin”. It need not be as bad as people think. The injections become as routine as brushing your teeth. The dietary changes are what should be healthy eating for everyone, and exercise is good for us all! Like the endocrine problems, with careful treatment, complications can be avoided and minimized, and a long, full life is possible.
At the Manchester Clinic, the Paediatrician, General Practitioner and Dietician work together so we can treat diabetics of all ages.
