Growth Problems

Growth and development are fundamental to paediatrics and are one important way in which paediatrics differs from adult medicine.

One of the things that parents often worry about with children is their size – weight and height. There are many conditions that can cause deviation from the normal and whole books have been written on this topic alone!

Dr Hardy has studied this in great detail and in fact has his own protocol / flow chart for the management of short stature.

Most children we see whose parents complain are short, are in fact within the normal range. Knowing the parents heights and the child’s height and bone age (x-ray of left wrist) it is possible to predict his final height – also to work out what the average of the parent’s male and female children’s final heights should be.

There are exceptions to every rule but these 2 statements are generally true.

  • If a child is small, but growing at a normal speed it is unlikely that there will be any treatment needed. The problem if there is a problem lies in the past.
  • If a child is short and fat it may be a hormone problem – e.g thyroid, growth hormone. If a child is tall and fat it is likely to be simple obesity.

On weight the term "failure to thrive" means failure to gain weight properly in young children. It is usually nutritional, but there are many other causes.

Obesity as everybody knows is generally from too much of the wrong food and not enough exercise. We can help (paediatrician + dietician) with both problems
