Pituitary Problems in Children

The pituitary is the master of the endocrine orchestra.

If the pituitary is damaged it will affect many other glands and there may be many hormone deficiencies eg the thyroid and adrenal glands, and the hormones which cause puberty to occur. If the posterior pituitary is involved it will cause diabetes insipidus – the passage of lots of urine without sugar.

The commonest pituitary hormone deficiency is, however, growth hormone and this deficiency can occur on its own.

With growth hormone deficiency the child grows very slowly and becomes progressively smaller compared to other children his age. Typically they are short and plump and have a baby face. Boys may have a small willy. It is one of the important conditions not to miss when investigating short stature. It can be treated very successfully with growth hormone.

Growth hormone will also work for babies very small at birth who have not caught up by 3 or 4 years. As a general statement all the hormones that are missing have to be replaced.
